Marley is really going through some changes right now. She is figuring everything out. She most recently discovered how play with her tongue, I guess. She is always sticking it out, flicking it like a little snake, and even licking and biting at the air like dogs do when you

blow in there face. It, really funny to sit and watch her discover her own body and surroundings.

A while ago I thought Marley was teething, I could have been wrong because now she is really showing almost all the signs of teething. If you think your baby may be teething check this list out.

1. Irritability: When the fist tooth gets closer to breaking through, the baby’s gums might get more and more sore, often leading to fussiness and crying.

2. Drooling: When the baby starts her teething process you might see a ton of drool… lots more that normal. Teething makes the babies lots, some more that others.

3. Coughing: Because of all the extra drool, your baby might cough of gag occasionally. As long as there are no other signs of a cold, and no fever, some coughing is normal.

4. Chin rash: If the baby drools lots and lots, the constant contact of drool on the face might cause a rash on the chin and mouth. Just make sure to wipe the baby’s face often to help the baby from getting a chapped chin and mouth.

5. Biting & gnawing: A teething baby will gnaw and gum down on anything. The pressure from biting helps relieve and numbs the pain. There are tons of good teething aid that will really help the baby feel better.

6. Cheek rubbing and ear pulling: Pain in the gums might also effect the ears and cheeks especially when the molars start to come in. This is why you might see your baby rubbing their cheeks or pulling at their ears. 8. Mild fever: Many parents find that their baby will get a mild fever during teething. If your baby has a fever of 102 degrees for longer than 2 days… call a doctor.

He’d didn’t even have any experience in babies, let alone have enough knowledge to be able to use a pram effectively, not that he had much experience in anything, beyond his line of work. Biting nervously at the edge of his lip, eye darting nervously from side to side, he took his free hand and patted at the top of his brow, which was growing slightly damp with perspiration. Damn, it’s getting hot, he thought. Not much he could do about it now, it had all spiralled beyond anyone’s control a long time ago, and this final pram thrust would reveal the true outcome of all that he had strived so hard to achieve. His heart was pounding hard and fast, filling his ears with the rush of coursing blood. The men that surrounded him were far larger than him, as was the weaponry each of them was carrying. There was no way he was getting out of this one without taking some drastic course of action. He decided now was the time to do so. As he thought this, he tensed, closed his eyes and thrust the pram forward, towards the man in front of him, the man gasped, nothing more. This final thrust was an exclamation mark on everything that had led to this point, he released his fingers from the handle.

For today’s kids, the Internet chat room has become the 21st century equivalent of the shopping mall or other popular hangout. The most popular, MySpace.com, claims over 50 million users. Parents should be aware that these virtual meeting places are also where pedophiles “troll” for new victims. And they’re very clever too.

As a part of the pedophile’s “grooming” process, the child gets messages that flatter and compliment them. Unknown to you, the pedophile slowly becomes an important part of your child’s life by boosting their self-esteem. As the pedophile casually turns to the subject of sex, the “right” answers yield praise and the wrong replies produce silence. Eventually they may meet in person. Sometimes with tragic results. What can you do?

Here’s what to look for if you suspect your son or daughter may be in danger online:

1.Does your child cover the monitor screen or quickly close an open browser window when you suddenly enter their room?

2.Do they seem angry or defensive when you enter the room while they’re online, but remain calm otherwise?

3.Are they staying up (and online), much later than usual?

4.Do they immediately jump on the computer when they get home from school?

5.Do they prefer being online and shun extracurricular activities and family outings?

A common trick of pedophiles is to use a screen name designed to mask their true identity. Just because someone’s screen name is “Heavensent,” doesn’t mean they’re really a young girl. “SurfBoy,” may not be a teenage boy. As mentioned in the new feature film on this subject, “Hamal_18,” “You never know who you’re really talking to.”

A good rule-of-thumb is to never reveal any personal information (i.e.; phone number, address, real name, age, sex or school name), to anyone online. Your teens and pre-teens should never forget that someone else may be secretly monitoring their conversations, or “lurking.” Your child’s real friends will already know their personal information anyhow.

If there’s just one Internet-connected computer in your home, avoid placing it in your child’s bedroom where it will be difficult to observe. Favor a more public area “where everyone can use it.” Set limits on computer usage: they’re great for homework, but not at 11:00PM. But, how can you find out exactly where your children are spending their online time?

Because most kids use an Internet browser like Internet Explorer or Netscape, here’s a neat trick that’s easy to remember. When either of these programs are open, hold down the “Ctrl” key while you press the letter “H” on the keyboard. This will automatically display a detailed history of every Internet location your child has recently been to.

Click twice on each line and view the places last visited by your child.

Here’s what to look for:

1.Select “By Most Visited” from the drop down “View” menu. Are there numerous entries for one website over a period of several weeks? For example, MySpace, or the groups hosted by Yahoo, Google or MSN?

2.Do you spot the word “sex,” or any other troubling words in a listing?

3.Does any listing begin with the letters “alt” ? (a type of site where pornography is often displayed)

4.The letters “IRC” (Internet Relay Chat), indicate that your child has been to at least one site specifically to chat and nothing else. (IRC chat rooms are not maintained by any particular company like Yahoo, Google or MSN.)

If your child’s a heavy computer user but the history list is empty, you should be concerned. Deliberately erasing or turning off the browser’s history may mean they have something to hide.

Although many popular websites are “moderated,” you must not assume that these chat rooms are safe. No moderator can be expected to review thousands of messages.

Internet Messenger, or “IM” allows real-time communication between users. This extremely popular technology provides an easy way of sending short messages as well as actual voice chat, webcams, file swapping and photo exchange. It’s also widely used on cell phones and other hand-held devices. Most popular is AOL’s Instant Messenger, but there are others including Yahoo and MSN’s Messenger program.

Sexual predators love IM because:

•They can operate in relative anonymity.

•Easy to contact children by using member directories and profiles.

•Simple to have a private one-on-one conversation.

•They can easily contact children because they know when they’re online.

•Can send sexually-related messages and images.

Here’s a few tips to make using AOL’s Instant Messenger safer:

1.Open AOL Instant Messenger’s Preferences screen by clicking on My Aim, then Edit Options, followed by Edit Preferences.

2.Select Privacy from the list of options.

3.You will see an area at the bottom of the box which is titled: Allow users who know my email address to find…

4.Select Nothing about me.

5.Now, select Talk from the list of other options.

6.In the box labeled, When others want to talk with you, select Don’t Allow.

7.Now, select IM/Chat from the list on the left

8.Deselect the check box labeled “Show Accept Message dialog for messages from users not on my Buddy List.”

Words are truly powerful things. They are something that becomes a part of us, our history, and our legacy. From my own life experiences, I have understood how words, simple words said in passing to a child, can leave an impression and help manifest a future purpose.

As a writer, I was born with words and stories of hope. When I was four, my mother let me construct words on a typewriter, always encouraging me to create more. Through the years, she gave me the words of strength, hope, and love that pushed me to become the first person on both sides of my family to graduate from college. When I was in college, my English professor, Dr. Joanne Dempsey, told me one rainy day, “One day, you will be a writer.” I’ve kept these women’s powerful words in my heart and have, in turn, tried to give words of hope and encouragement to others.

Through the years, I have tried to pass on the legacy that Dr. Dempsey, perhaps unknowingly, left for me that one rainy day. She taught me, as did my mother, that words spoken to an impressionable mind can invoke a sense of purpose that fulfills a destiny. For, indeed, all of us have a purpose. Our purpose lies like a tiny ember in our heart, stoked into brilliant flame by the kind words of a stranger, a mentor, a parent, or a friend. A teacher can tell a struggling student, “You’re smart,” and those words help him find the confidence to become President of the United States. A stranger can say “You’re pretty” to a young girl from Mississippi and those words help her become a beloved humanitarian. A parent can say, “You’re special,” and those words can help his children unleash the power of potential.

Each day I give my two daughters, Dempsey and Ceiley, the words to reach forward and fulfill their purpose. I believe that we are given the gift of a child and, like the wise elders of years past, we are meant to infuse them with all of our history and knowledge. The words of the past and the words of the future connect us all like links in a chain. All powerful words give hope. The mightiest words are those we share with our children. They must know the words of our ancestors for all families are linked together like a chain. Children must know the value of their particular link. They must strengthen their bond and pass on the words to their children so that future generations can grow in spirit.

But how do we do this? Children are really taking a back seat in our society. Many children are spoiled, lacking nothing, but lacking much. For what they lack are the words that would jump start their human spirit. The words that would make them tingle with an excitement to learn new things and explore their natural environment.

I have crafted many stories about human relationships, but one day I was really struck by this particular notion of purpose. My daughters and I were walking home from school when a simple brown leaf fell silently from an oak tree lining the sidewalk. No one really noticed. My kids kept walking but suddenly, for me, time stood still. It was sort of a “if a tree falls in the woods” moment. Why did the leaf fall, I wondered, and who really cared? I realized that even that leaf had a purpose, one that it may not have even realized.

We are all like the leaf. We all have a deep, profound purpose to our lives that we may not even understand until it becomes manifest. This purpose may be very simple on the surface, but may deeply affect the course of many lives. We are all instrumental in each other’s greater purpose. You never know when you might be the one with the words to create the next Mother Theresa or the next loving mother who nurtures and creates a wonderful child.

This leaf struck me to my core and from my notions I crafted a story of simplicity and truth. It is called A Simple Brown Leaf. It tells the story of an autumn leaf that thinks its life is over when it falls from a tree, not realizing that it is being watched by a squirrel who plans to use it to line her nest for winter. Its main message is that every living creature has a purpose, no matter how we try to trivialize it.

I truly believe that this is one of the most important messages we can give children today. Many children grow up believing that they could disappear off of the face of the Earth and no one would notice. Kids today grow up in a world of despair and lack a sense of hope. It doesn’t have to be like this.

Words are powerful things. Perhaps the solution is simple. Could I child pick up a book and begin thinking about his/her life’s path? Can we instill a sense of importance from a young age - a sense of knowing that ‘I have a place in the world?’ I think all of our futures depend on finding the words within ourselves that say, ‘I am powerful!’
