Health and Safety at Work: Much More than Mere Education

It’s belief in a significant amount of companies that, if all of their employees have basic health & safety instruction, they now have everything they need to prevent a catastrophe. In reality however, employees should have much more than simply basic instruction in safety regulations and risk assessment. You need to provide your employees with a great supervisor, not to mention equip them properly and give them the chance to practice. Every team needs an excellent supervisor to watch over employee performance, but this person must also take a greater purpose. Any supervisor you employ is required to understand that health & safety education is fundamental and have the ability to get other employees excited. On top of insuring compliance with health & safety regulations, a supervisor’s role includes managing employee performance as well. This is a tricky role. A good standard business knowledge is a must in a supervisory position in addition to a high level of knowledge of up-to-date legislation regarding safety, risk assessment and CPR. It simply is not sufficient to supply your employees with health & safety training. Your employees have to practise risk assessment and the identification of hazards. Employees have to understand the best method of dealing with safety hazards and knowing what to do if disaster strikes. Workers are only properly protected when everything they have been taught has become a habit. Education is useless if you don’t purchase the necessary safety equipment. When they don’t have the right equipment or alternatively should workers see that equipment is broken only after an emergency has occurred, then all the education your staff have already finished is basically useless.

It’s a good idea to schedule frequent checks to make sure you possess all the necessary supplies and that it’s functioning properly. When your apparatus does not meet the relevant criteria, ensure that it is remedied rapidly and return it to the right place.

Your staff must receive good health and safety instruction, but in addition they also need to have good quality apparatus, frequent practises, and a knowledgeable supervisor who gets employees excited about being safe at work. And then complying with all the safety regulations before long be ingrained in the culture of your business instead of an inconvenience that staff have to try to think about all the time.
