Ten Qualities Of A Great Leader - Plus 1

Great Leaders are optimists first and foremost. Their tendency is to interact according to Henry Ford’s observation, “whether you think you can or think you can’t - you are right.” Because the buck must stop somewhere and because the dynamic of authority dictates that all delegated authorities are themselves subject to authority, they understand that being a leader is far more than a title. The ten qualities listed herein are based on these assumptions and are just the beginning of developing the character of a great leader. Here’s to a great beginning!

1. Great Leaders are mission inclined and ensure the survival of the vision. By making certain that the principles of that vision are daily implemented, the Great Leader indicates a firm grasp of the mission and visions of the organization and is in agreement with them, making a conscious choice to submit to and support them.

2. Great Leaders are providers, oriented to whatever the individual or team cannot supply for itself. The leader is often called to provide for needs the group is virtually unaware of. It becomes the role of the leader to first identify the need, and then to provide a means of fulfillment.

3. Great Leaders are motivated by the welfare of the team. The motive is never self-promotion, self-aggrandizement. The great leader self-checks frequently. The welfare of the team will always be in line with the greater mission, if integrity is at the base.

4. Great Leaders are always ready to provide the tools necessary for achieving the goals of the team. Individual and team achievement furthers the purpose of the organizational mission. Great Leaders must assess the needs and provide the tools, as well as the instruction necessary to attain and maintain optimum productivity.

5. Great Leaders have great integrity (wholeness, soundness) and assume the role of keeper of ethics. Leaders must articulate the ethical expectations necessary to maintain the wholeness and soundness of the team, as well as the individual members. The two are inseparable.

6. Great Leaders are consistently teachable. Information flows from the top. Zest for information and knowledge will do the same. An eager to learn leader will generate followers enthusiastic about the process as well.

7. Great Leaders are always willing to step aside rather than compromise the team. We have established that the Great Leader is motivated by the welfare of the team rather than his or her own agenda, and as a result, will step aside if necessary to insure it. The same is true of the Great Leader’s dedication to team unity and productivity. The leader will never play one member against another as a tactic, realizing that unity of purpose, when grounded in the integrity of the vision, will always lead to increased productivity and progress.

8. Great Leaders do not take control, but accept surrendered control. Seized control will ultimately end in rebellion and insurrection. Conversely, cooperation always follows surrendered control, the voluntary submission to authority. (Note: sub=under, and mission=vision, i.e., a voluntary stepping under, in a supporting capacity, to the mission of the team, the reason for its continued existence.)

9. Great Leaders understand the awesome responsibility of guiding human beings.
At any level - - in any organization - - for any reason - - without reservation

10. Great Leaders understand the difference between passion for excellence and passion for power. Passion for excellence is fervor and zeal for fineness and quality. Passion for power is lust and greed for control, at any cost. These two highlight the enormous variance between Authority and Power.

Plus One…

Great Leaders always lead by example. The Great Leader is always willing, at any point, to walk out in front of the group. The Great Leader is never merely an observer. All other qualities will flow naturally from this characteristic at the very heart of Great Leadership.

San Francisco [Almost a Sonnet]

(The city by the bay of Northern California, near which the Pacific Ocean resides; the year is 1967)

Mid October seemed like some spring day,

When through the poised waters, dry as lead,
The ferry, like vague shadows that stand the dead,

Slipped down the curved coast of Frisco bay,
Rounded the Golden Gate, and San Francisco lay,
Before me, that gay city, pink and red,
Hippies covered Haigh Asbury’s homeless head,

My home, to be, I found stirring and grey.

The waves busted on the wooden-sides; fishermen

Nearby with long necks, looked and cast again.
Deep in emerald waters we wandered free,
When abruptly the bay currents were stirred

The ferry bearing restrained the great sea bird
Settling, like Asbury’s spirit, in the sea.

6/4/05 #708

Note by the Author: Sonnets are tricky little creatures, and although I started out to create one, I found I had to lay it aside, and create a semi-sonnet, for I did not want to lose tone, and spirit of the waters around the bay of San Francisco, and the echoes that came with it. I had lived there in l967-68 for a year. And many ferry rides were available for a few dollars. Some even chanced it by going under and out beyond the Golden Gate, and so it was the supreme achievement of my youthful years to have become a part of this fascinating city, in such a fascinating time period, one unequalled since the 1920’s when Hemingway and Fitzgerald walked the streets of Paris, and Scott, coined the term, “The Jazz Age,” back in l967, it was the Hippie Era.

I suppose for me, I do not feel bound by formal regularity to create a full sonnet, but in this poem neither did I want blank verse, which is unrhymed iambic pentameter. So this is what I came up with. The trip I took on the boat was actually with my mother, who came to visit me in the city by the bay, as I had gotten drafted to go into the Army, and onto Vietnam. It was a joyful memory for both of us, which lasted until she passed on in 2003; yes, we talked about those far off days in San Francisco, of which she only stayed for a week, for 35-years; what more can one ask for out an experience.

The Health Benefits of Cranberry

As long ago as 1840, German doctors discovered that the urine of people who ate cranberries contained a chemical called hippuric acid. The doctors were researching the finding that these same people had a significantly lower incidence of urinary tract infections (UTIs) such as cystitis and pyelonephritis.

By the 1960s, when doctors were dispensing antibiotics like candy, the use of cranberries to counteract UTIs had fallen out of favor. Researchers claimed that tests showed the acidifying effect of cranberries and cranberry juice was inadequate to prevent infection.

However, as late as 1994, a Harvard University study involving 153 elderly women with repeated urinary tract infections showed that regular consumption of cranberry juice cocktail decreased the frequency of UTIs. In a clinical trial from Weber State University in Utah, a concentrated cranberry product in dehydrated, capsule form - equivalent to 12 to 16 six ounce glasses of cranberry juice a day - was found to be equally effective. Some health professionals recommend the capsules over cranberry juice because of the sugar content of cranberry cocktail and the unpalatable taste of the unsweetened juice.

For many years it was believed that cranberries prevented or cured urinary tract infections by acidifying the urine, thus creating an inhospitable environment for the Escherichia coli (E coli) bacteria usually responsible for UTIs.

However, a benchmark study by a team of scientists at Rutgers State University in New Jersey, published in the New England Journal of Medicine on October 6, 1998, disclosed that condensed tannins, called proanthocyanidins, are the compounds in cranberries responsible for preventing and treating UTIs. They work, not by making the urine more acid, but by preventing the bacteria from binding to the wall of the urinary tract. This non-adherence renders the bacteria harmless. The researchers used a process called bioassay-directed fractionation to isolate the compounds, a process that took almost five years to complete.

In addition to its principal role in combating urinary tract infections, researchers are finding that cranberries may also have broad-spectrum antibiotic value against E. coli and other harmful bacteria. In a study conducted at the University of California at Irvine, two batches of soy broth, one with cranberry juice concentrate and one without, were incubated for a 24-hour period. According to the research letter published in The Journal of the American Medical Association, the broth containing the cranberry juice showed a significantly lower growth of bacteria than the one without.

Dentists in Israel report that cranberries and cranberry juice contain specific compounds that can block the formation of dental plaque and potentially lessen tooth decay and gum disease. Test tube research at the University of Wisconsin indicates that cranberry juice may help keep LDL cholesterol (the bad type of cholesterol) from oxidizing. If confirmed, the consumption of cranberries or cranberry juice will help prevent the build up of cholesterol plaque in arteries, the major cause of heart disease and stroke.

Cranberries are an excellent source of vitamins A and C and potassium. Although cranberry juice contains some tannins, it will not interfere with the absorption of minerals. Furthermore, some older people with too little stomach acid, or those taking acid suppressors, may find that their ability to absorb vitamin B12 is impaired. Cranberry juice appears to enhance the absorption of this important vitamin in such cases.

Recommended Dosage

Health professionals recommend one capsule or tablet of a concentrated cranberry juice extract (400mg) two to four times per day. Two to three large (16oz.) glasses of cranberry juice may also be taken, but avoid the highly sugared cranberry “cocktails.” It’s hard to drink too much cranberry juice. The only contraindication is that diarrhea may develop with a very high consumption, such as three to four liters per day.

If you prefer your medicine as food, try the following two recipes:

Herbal Cranberry Punch

  • 1 quart of unsweetened cranberry juice

  • 1 cup of fresh lemon balm leaves

  • cup of fresh lavender flowers (or 1 Tbsp. of dried)

  • 2 cinnamon sticks, broken

  • 6 whole cloves

Bring two and a half cups of water to the boil while adding the lemon balm, lavender, cinnamon and cloves. Reduce the heat and simmer for 10 minutes. Remove from the heat and steep for another five minutes. Strain and combine with the cranberry juice in a pitcher. Add honey to taste as a sweetener. May be served cold or heated with more spices if desired as a mulled drink. May also be combined with other fruit juices for a variety of flavors.

    Cran-Apple Crisp

  • 4 organic apples, such as Gala, cored, peeled and diced

  • cup of dried cranberries

  • cup plus 1 Tbsp. of whole wheat flour

  • 1/3 cup of brown sugar

  • 2 Tbsp. of honey

  • Juice of lemon

  • cup of whole oats

  • cup of ground almonds (other nuts may be substituted)

  • cup of butter, melted.

Combine the apples, cranberries, one Tbsp. of flour, honey and lemon juice and pour into a greased, eight-inch baking dish. In another bowl blend together the half-cup of flour, brown sugar, oats, nuts and butter. Pack this mixture over the fruit. Bake at 375F for about 45 minutes until the top is brown and crisp.

It’s Not Authentic Unless it Comes From Your Heart

A direct correlation between feelings and rational though as a complete thinking process has been under scientific study for at least a decade. It’s called the study of Neurocardiology.

Remember a time when you “had a feeling” that a result would occur. Of course you went against the grain of that inspiration and what happened?

A good majority of time the path you followed was a disaster. And you said, “I knew I should have done it the other way instead.”

That’s your Heart talking. That gentle voice that whispers in your ear, providing you with inspiration to follow. The problem is that voice is so gentle; it’s hard for many people to hear.

The reason is conditioning. You are so used to listening to your rational mind SCREAMING its demands; it’s next to impossible to hear a whisper.

Let’s take that one step further. Is your business a direct reflection of how you feel about your life or is it something you do just to make money?

Here’s a simple exercise you can do tomorrow morning to find out

When you wake up, don’t just jump out of bed and start running. Instead, STOP for a second and evaluate how you feel about the new day ahead.

Do you feel like “Oh no, it’s Monday. I sure wish it was Saturday.” Or do you feel energized and on fire; bounding out of bed waiting to start the new day.

About 90% the people reading this article are feeling the former, unfortunately.

If “Oh no” is your mantra, you are not expressing the full range of talent, knowledge, experience and value you offer to other people. You are not fully expressing your talent in business. As a result, you feel flat and uninspired.

Not too long ago, I had a feeling that I shouldn’t take on a project. In my heart I felt that it wouldn’t be in my best interest to have that person as a new client.

But my “salesman” mind took over and I persevered. I ran the drill: call, connect, clear and focused next step, mailing, follow up, repeat.

Fortunately, by the 3rd follow up I listened to my feelings and withdrew my offer.

With the time that opened up, I channeled energy into the Pull Your Life into Focus Forum. I attracted great people for the first program.

That fit my talent perfectly and added value to the lives of others at the same time. It was an authentic heartfelt fit.

I’ve seen the same thing happen with careers too. I have a client who tried everything to make money. One idea, then the next, then the next. Nothing worked. He bounced from one idea to another looking for that “magic bullet.”

When we started working together I asked one simple question. What are you most interested in? It turns out he had an exceptional technical background and was interested in using his knowledge and experience in ways that made a positive impact on the environment and people’s lives.

He went on a mission and today, as I write this article, he made his first major sale. He simply started talking from his heart about something he was passionate about and that energy, enthusiasm and conviction lead to him helping someone else solve a challenge.

I got a telephone message from him this morning. “High on Heart” is the best way I can describe his enthusiasm.

How about you? Do your days inspire or deplete you?

Enthusiastic people attract more of the same energy. Unfortunately, so do uninspired people. What you put into the world is what you get back. It’s one gigantic mirror reflecting back at you.

Let’s go back to that AM wake up call. How did you feel this morning?

If your days inspire you, email me your story at inspire@developyourvision.com and let me know. I’ll add the best couple of inspiring stories to my blog. Fame and fortune await people with an enthusiastic heart

If you are suffering from lack of authentic heart in your business, follow these ACTION steps:

    1. Make a list of your greatest talents in life. Don’t limit it to just business. What are your talents? (Your talent, part 1)

    2. Next, list your passions. What would you do if money was no object and you could do anything you want? (Your passions)

    3. What is the greatest contribution you must make to other people? If you had only five years left to live, what would you have to do? (Your destiny)

    4. What do other people see in you? What are you consistently told you are good at by other people? (Your talent part 2. Many times other people see things in us that we miss).

    5. What will you put up with and what won’t you put up with in your life? (Your values).

    6. Make a list of your talents, values, passions and destiny. Then take the # 1 point from each area and create a statement.

    7. The purpose of your life is to live your greatest talents and passions and to add value to the lives of other people.

When you live your life as an authentic, heartfelt expression of your creative potential for the purpose of helping others, amazing things happen in your life.

It all starts the day you decide to change your mind and live from your heart instead of your head.

Make This Your Most Productive Year Ever - 26 Tips

Each year we start the year thinking about our goals, our job, our health, all the ‘new’ routines and commitments we make to ourself to make this our best year yet… but two weeks into January all our planning and resolution goes out the window! You can make this your best year ever by applying some of these simple ideas (and re-reading this article each year to keep you on track.

Make a date. Make time in your diary to find a quiet, comfortable location to set your goals. I spend a morning at my favourite table in the tearoom of the Sheraton on the Park (a beautiful hotel in Sydney city) in January every year to review my goals and set new ones for the year ahead.

No more New Year’s Resolutions! Instead, focus on creating realistic goals for all areas of your life - I call these your top 5.

Take five. Create five categories for which to set goals: physical, educational, spiritual, financial, and relational. By setting goals for each of these areas of your life, you will be taking a balanced approach and not neglecting any important aspects of your life.

Write it. You must write your goals down - it makes them more powerful. Use positive language - words like “I will” and “I am” - this will help you to feel as though you have already achieved your goals and to change your behaviors accordingly, for example, “I am going to the gym three times per week”. Make sure you allocate a specific timeframe for the completion of each goal, for example, “By the beginning of March, I am going to the gym three times per week”. Now, identify a reward for achieving each goal - don’t just make a list of rewards, relate a specific reward to the achievement of a specific goal. This will inspire you even more toward the achievement of your goal. And finally, list the possible obstacles that will get in the way of you achieving each goal, and how you will overcome these. This will help you to pre-empt the things that might go wrong and immediately swing into action with your solution, rather than giving up on your goal.

Review constantly. I have been told that the difference between a millionaire and a billionaire is that a billionaire reads their goals twice a day. Simple really. I keep a copy of my goals in several locations around my house (on the bathroom mirror, on the printer, outside the shower screen, on the fridge, on my bedside table and in my wallet), which makes it easy for me to see my goals and be reminded of what I am working towards several times a day.

Use it or lose it! I recently read - people who spend a thousand dollars or more each year on their personal development will increase their business by 20 percent. Read more books, attend workshops, find a new networking group, listen to tapes or CDs in your car, do online courses or enrol at college or university. Keep your brain active.

Make time. Eliminate time-robbers from your day - make a list of all the things you do that rob you of your time, such as watching too much TV, running errands inefficiently, checking and responding to your email too often, making long phone calls, waiting in traffic and even other people. Focus on controlling your time - organising your day efficiently and getting rid of the things in your life that are not a high priority.

Update your Resume. Make an appointment with yourself for one hour to update your resume. Be prepared. You never know when that job of your dreams might come along or if an internal opportunity becomes available.

Create a paperless desk. Remove all paperwork from your desk: establish files for your projects; reference folders for information you need to access regularly; a reading file for articles, reports, journals and FYI documents; and a daily-file for administrative, miscellaneous and day-specific tasks, and keep these on shelves or in drawers.

Out of sight, out of mind. Remove your in-tray from your desk or get rid of it all together if you can! Keep it out of sight so the contents don’t distract you and so that people don’t drop new items into it without you noticing.

Hang a ‘Do Not Disturb’ sign. If you have an actual office with a door, this one is easy. But many workplaces today are open plan and it’s difficult to alert people to the fact that you don’t wish to be interrupted - but there are ways around it. I know one workplace where each person has an item (in this case, a toy frog) which when placed on top of their computer means that they are not available - that they are trying to concentrate on something. When the frog comes down, everyone knows they are available again. With the agreement of everyone in the team, this system works particularly well for an open plan environment. Another technique is to use headphones - when people see you have headphones on they know you are not tuned-in to what’s happening around you - you don’t even have to be listening to anything if you find that too distracting - just put your headphones on to signal your ‘do not disturb’ request.

Book a daily meeting with yourself. Block-out the first 60-minutes in your diary or calendar every day. Treat it as a standing commitment and protect it from being eaten into by other people’s meeting requests. Overtime, people will learn that you are not available until a certain time (which will vary depending on when you schedule your 60-minutes) and they’ll work around you.

Unplug. Schedule one TV-free night each week. Switch off the set and instead listen to your favourite music, play a board or card game, read a book, enjoy a quiet meal by candle light (alone or with someone whose company you love), go on a date or soak in a bath. Start being aware of your television viewing habits and make a point of only watching programs that you truly enjoy and stop wasting precious time in front of the TV.

Manage your reading. Create a reading file and put it in your briefcase. If you don’t already have one, start a reading file and carry it with you on your way home. You can get through a surprising amount of reading while on public transport to and from work and while waiting in queues.

VIPs Only. Surround yourself with VIPs (Very Inspiring People) and eliminate VDPs (Very Draining People). Spending more time with VIPs will inspire, motivate and invigorate you. Minimise your time with the VDPs in your life. It can be difficult to make the switch - be strict with yourself and you’ll reap the rewards of being among the VIP crowd.

Where are you going next? Plan your next holiday, even if you’re already on one! Block-out your holidays and short breaks at the beginning of each year. By scheduling and planning for your holidays in advance you’ll not only have something to look forward to but you’ll have a much better chance of avoiding the usual pre-holiday stress which comes with trying to complete everything before you go - and much less chance of neglecting to take those much-needed breaks.

Find a mentor. When you identify the person you believe would be a suitable mentor, spend some time watching them in action. Ask around to find out what other people’s opinion of your chosen mentor are and find out all you can about their achievements, beliefs, values and way of operating. This will give you insight into them before you approach them about mentoring you.

Leave a detailed message. Whether it is voicemail or with the person who does answer the phone. Make sure you include the time and date you called, a brief mention of what you are calling about and how and when they can contact you. If you are going to be difficult to catch or have scheduled some time during which you won’t be taking phone calls yourself, by leaving a contact time you can avoid a frustrating game of ‘phone tag’.

Schedule email time. Email messages popping into your inbox all day long can be an enormous distraction, particularly if your email is set to alert you every time new mail arrives. To check in on your emails and respond to them as they arrive not only distracts you from whatever tasks or projects you are working on but can rob you of an entire day, responding to other people’s needs while your own are neglected. Schedule a couple or a few times each day to check and respond to emails rather than constantly looking-in on your inbox or being bounced there by your email program with every new message.

Your signature. Use your email program to create an email signature block that will automatically attach to all of your outgoing messages; it’s a little like an email letterhead. It saves you the effort of including your contact information every time and brings a professional touch to your communications. You might simply include your name, business name, contact details and website or you might also include a sentence or two about your business, a special promotion you are running with a link to your website, or even a favourite funny or inspirational quote.

Spelll chceck. Email makes each one of us an instant author - and, that’s not necessarily a good thing! Always, always re-read your emails before you send them to make sure they make sense and to fix any spelling or grammatical errors. I recommend you set your email to automatically spell-check every message before it is sent. And if you need a second opinion to check for clarity, tone or correctness, ask a colleague to look over it for you. It might be inconsequential to you, but a poorly worded email that conveys the wrong tone and is riddled with spelling and grammatical errors can destroy your creditability and relationships.

Spring clean. Schedule time to clean out your email regularly, once a month should be enough to keep you on top of it. Empty your deleted items and any unnecessary sent items, and go through any completed project or task folders and ensure that anything you are keeping is essential to your records. Cleaning out your email will ensure you are managing your email files and disk space effectively.

Set up systems. When using filing cabinets, decide how you will allocate your space to make it easiest to locate your files: for example, rather than mixing all your files together you might decide to keep current customer files in one drawer and potential customer files and marketing information in a separate drawer, or you might choose to store current projects in one drawer and research and reference information in another, or you might decide to file everything in alphabetical order - you get the idea - look at the type of files you have and decide how to logically divide them into categories. Then, label the front of each drawer with the type of files it contains.

Colour it. Use colour coding to further systemise your files and to enable you to identify different types of files at a glance. Choose a range of coloured manila folders and allocate a different colour to use for different file types: for example, blue for customer files, purple for staff files, pink for project files and so on. Make a reference list of what each colour represents until you are familiar with your system.

Create a confidence journal. We don’t all feel confident every day and sometimes it helps to take note of our feelings and how situations affect us. By writing down how you feel each day in a confidence journal you can track your responses to situations and also identify areas of your like you might need some help with. Just do this for 30 days and then spend an hour at the end of the month assessing where you find your confidence gets shaken and then determine strategies to help you overcome that in future.

Choose to be amazing! It’s as simple as making a commitment to yourself every morning that you will have an amazing day. Remember, life is not a dress rehearsal - we only get one performance, so let’s give it our best!

How To Build Traffic To Your Blog

With the growing interest in blogging as a means of online promotion and branding, a lot of marketers are starting blogs to promote their opinions, products, books and services.

But a blog is like a website. “Write and they will come” isn’t exactly a magic formula to bring in traffic by the boatload.

If you need to promote your website in order to build traffic to it, you need to promote your blog as well.

Here are some ways you can become a well-read and influential blogger.

    1. Write Posts That People Will Want To Read

This should be common sense, but many marketers tend to forget that their readers are real people and that you need to use the principles of online copywriting to make your headlines and copy interesting to your readers.

If you write posts that people enjoy reading, they will reward you by returning to your blog regularly.

Make your posts conversational, pithy and topical. Keep them short and stick to one topic per post.

Write often and regularly so that both readers and search engines visit your blog more often.

    2. Optimize Your Posts for Search Engines

I cover this topic in detail in my article on “Search Engine Optimization For Blogs”

But here are the most important rules to follow to get your posts listed for keywords of your choice.

    • Make sure your blog URL contains the primary keyword you want to optimize for
    • Use your primary keywords in the title of your post
    • Use your secondary keywords in the body of your post
    • Use your keywords in the anchor text of links in the body of your posts

    3. Submit Your Blog and RSS Feed To Directories

If you publish a blog you should submit your blog and RSS feed to big directories like Yahoo and Dmoz, as well as the numerous blog directories and search engines.

Here is the best list I’ve found of places to submit your feed or blog, compiled by Luigi Canali De Rossi, who writes under the pseudonym Robin Good.

    4. Ping The Blog Services

There are a number of services designed specifically for tracking and connecting blogs. By sending a small ping to each service you let them know you’ve updated your blog so they can come check you out.

Bookmark the Ping-O-Matic ping results page so you can visit it and quickly ping a number of services with a single click.

    5. Build Links To Your Blog

I recommend the methods here as the best ways to get links pointing to your blog.

    • Link to your blog from each page on your main website
    • Trackback to other blogs in your posts
    • Post legitimate comments on other blogs with related topics
    • Offer to exchange links with other similarly themed blogs and websites

    6. Edit Your Blog Posts Into Articles

One of the best methods for promoting your website is to write articles and submit them to article directories.

The suggestion for extending this to edit your blog posts into articles and submit them to directories came from the coach at “Explode Blog Traffic” who also has other noteworthy suggestions at his blog.

You’ll find an extensive list of article directories here

    7. Create Buzz About Your Blog

Creating a buzz about your blog posts and topic in the local and online media will give your marketing a viral component.

    • Create a controversy around your blog or it’s topic.
    • Distribute bumper stickers or other merchandise with your blog’s URL and tagline.
    • Write a press release about something newsworthy and tie it in with your blog topic.

    8. Capture Subscribers By Email

It may seem strange for a blogger to send out updates by email, but email is still the #1 choice of most people who want to receive news and information.

Using a free service like Bloglet to manage your subscriptions is easy and it allows your subscribers to manage all their subscriptions from one interface.

However, if you want more control over your list and don’t mind mailing out the updates yourself, you can use an autoresponder system to capture and follow-up with subscribers.

RSS Responder is a new script that allows you to keep in touch and follow-up with your subscribers without the hassle of email.

These tips should give you a good start to building your blog traffic.
