Can a Child Thrive on a Vegan Diet? YES!

Can a child thrive on a vegan diet? The answer is yes! Far more studies show that a
typical ‘Western Diet’ has deleterious effects on health compared to the risks of a
vegan diet. In fact, vegetarian diets are associated with disease resistance and even
higher I.Q.’s in children. (1-5)

With proper planning and a bit of self-education, parents should feel confident in
giving their child a diet free of animal products.

Healthy food choices include the following:

Protein dense foods: beans, soy, whole grains, nuts, etc.

Calcium sources: beans, leafy greens, figs, blackstrap molasses, fortified beverages,
etc.

Iron sources: grains, dried fruit, coconut milk, blackstrap molasses, soybeans,
beans, etc.

Zinc sources: nuts, seeds, grains, chickpeas, soybeans, etc.

Avoid wheat and nuts until after one year of age, to avoid possible food sensitivities.

Supplementation may be necessary for children who are picky eaters, but most
nutritional needs can be met through diet. Vitamins D and B12 may be the
exception, and parents should ensure an optimal supply through fortified foods or
supplements.

Finding community support can be very important in helping your child maintain
healthy eating habits, as vegan diets are often misunderstood and even feared by
well-meaning family members, neighbours, and teachers. Many excellent resources
exist that can help educate those in your child’s life who have concerns, and
possibly alleviate any misconceptions they may have.

Raising a child on a vegan diet can be challenging in today’s world of hot-dogs and
ice cream, but parents should be assured that research is on their side.

Question: How Can I Tell if a Book is a First Edition or Not?

Question: I’m totally new at selling used books online, and am curious about identifying first editions. What does the row of numbers inside the cover mean? If the page doesn’t say, “First Edition,” does that mean it isn’t a first?

ANSWER: You’d think there would be a foolproof way of identifying first editions, but it’s pretty complicated since so many publisher have their own way of doing it.

Collectors who are looking for a “first edition” are actually looking for a “first printing.” These are the books that roll off the presses at the time of the book’s release. These books are collectible because they’re scarcer and considered closest to the author’s original intent. Some collectors use the term “first impression,” which is synonymous with “first printing.”

Sometimes, the publisher will make changes to the book’s text to fix typographical errors and other mistakes during a print run. The result is different “states” of the printing. Usually collectors are interested only in the first states of first printings.

To identify the printing, first look on the copyright page for a “statement of edition” or a number line. Sometimes the page states simply, “FIRST EDITION.” Keep in mind, though, publishers sometimes don’t delete the words “FIRST EDITION” after the book is in subsequent printings.

Next, look for the number line, a sequence of digits usually running from one to 10 for a first edition. It may be in the usual sequence from left to right, or it may have the one on the left, the two on the right, and the ten in the center. In any case, look for the one, which every book publisher uses to identify first editions — except Random House, that is, which designates firsts with a 2 on the number line, followed by the words “FIRST EDITION.”

If you don’t see a statement of edition or a statement of printing, look for something like this: “First published in 1965.” That’s a good sign, since a publisher who indicates when the book was first published will indicate subsequent printings also. With older books, one way of determining edition is by comparing the copyright page date with the title page date.

And beware of book club printings. Sometimes the copyright page of a book club edition can read “FIRST EDITION.” But of course it is not.

Tips to Smarter Snacking

Are you a between-meal eater? Many of us are, but that doesn’t mean you have to visit the vending machine all day. There are smarter ways to snack throughout the day where you can lower your calories and still fill the hunger gap.

Roberta Larson Duyff, MS, RD, author of the American Dietetic Association’s Complete Food and Nutrition Guide, goes over some common snacking times and makes a few smart suggestions on what healthier items we can replace those “filler” foods with.

When you need a wake-up or need a quick energy jolt: Eat a small breakfast of carbs and protein (cereal, egg, milk) or have an AM snack of proteins like peanuts or cottage cheese.

Before leaving the office for a meeting: A quick piece of fruit or chunk of cheese is good if you don’t know when lunch is coming.

Before working out: You might want pump up with a piece of fruit and a big glass of water.

After school or work: A small sandwich and a glass of milk will work, otherwise, people eat all the way until dinner, a cookie, a cracker, a soda, and are never satisfied. If you are cutting calories have some cut-up veggies or a rice cake with peanut butter or cheese.

When out with friends: Try splitting a dessert or snack when you go for dessert or grab a bite with your buddies.

Before partying: A cracker and cheese or little carrots are a good choice to take the edge off. Drink an equal amount of water after every drink when you can.

Before bed: Milk contains tryptophan, which makes some people sleepy, and chai tea can be soothing.

Snacking not only helps ease those nasty hunger pains, but it relaxes and softens stress. Snacking should not be used to escape boredom. Find the smart snacks that fit both your individual needs and the occasion at hand.

Gaming Establishment Taking a Chance: Games of Luck Gamblers like to Take Part in

gambling problems

On the assumption you haven’t caught on to gaming hall games, you’ll find more about this topic here —

For clarity’s sake: a betting establishment is a construction that features games. Here, visitors are encouraged to take a chance by having a bash at one-armed-bandits or some other gambling games. Gaming hall games commonly have mathematically derived likelihoods constituting them which promise the gaming hall retains the upper hand against the clients.

Countless betting room games can result in you becoming addicted rapidly. Case in point being the classic 1 armed bandit, a cash operated gadget with three, sometimes more cylinders which circle if a knob coupled to it is yanked. The contraption typically will spill winnings correlating with a range of pictograms asvisible on the front panel of the appliance. Lamentably, betting room games tend to push the false impression of staying in control, effectively hoodwinking the betting enthusiast — the addressee is provided with judgments, but they can’t really eliminate the customer’s fundamental odds. That is brought about by the the betting saloon never paying the full amount as hoped for. This systematic process is frequently found in acclaimed casino games like straight poker, dice games, roulette or blackjack.

Five card stud poker is truly an incredibly trendy casino pastime. The gaming fans, holding guarded hands, make wagers in the pot which is then paid out to the winning participant bearing the best hand. (Obviously, the bluffing hand may actually win too.)

Comparable to five card stud poker, blackjack too is a highly fashionable casino pastime. Plenty of its notoriety is grounded in its particular mix of luck and mastery and decision making, not to mention a process identified as card counting. This is a particular playing tactics in which gaming devotees may dramatically skew the arm of chance of the game for their own ends both by betting & systematic actions in correspondence with the cards shown.

“Craps” is a famous pastime based on the roll of a couple of dice. Clients have to place bets on the score of one cycle, or on a succession of rolls on two dice. Very much unlike blackjack, there just isn’t any practicable sustainable winner tactics punters could profit by to beat the odds.

Roulette is an immensely popular game: a croupier turns a roulette wheel that incorporates a set of 37 (classical roulette) or precisely thirtyeight (American roulette) distinctively numbered pockets in which the rolling pellet will finally come to rest, which establishes the winner Now if the player has wagered on a particular number which makes it meaning it’s their lucky day, the payout is 35:1, the stake being paid back. Hence in totality it’s increased by a factor of 36.

Please make sure to be very much on guard nonetheless for such betting room pastimes may well be particularly addictive. Countless lives are known to have been spoilt as a result of inordinate gambling + whereas it definitely feels enjoyable, do try to govern oneself.

Cyber Storm: America makes war on the First Amendment - their target, Bloggers

As you read this our government is ramping up a campaign of oppression against the heartland of America. Operation Cyber Storm, aimed directly at the right of free speech is ready to be deployed against all of us.

Bloggers are thus acknowledged as Americans last hope for freedom.

Bloggers have for years now shown their collective muscle of the mind and heart, changing the direction of government action in many instances, and exposing the corruption that is now endemic to every institution for which Americans pay so dearly.

Now the government has decided they must be silenced. It is time to fight back. We can return America to the governance of the people. In that battle bloggers are our first line of resistance.

The existence of those cantankerous bloggers whose on line discourse, diatribes, and insights annoy so many have become the last, best line of defense for the much tattered First Amendment. The rapidity with which bloggers change opinion has made them a force with which to be reckoned. Therefore this government under the speciously constructed argument of ‘terrorist threat’ is going after the Blogsphere.

It is time for those who truly care about America and our liberties as Americans to abandon the futile activities that replayed endlessly the activist organizing of the 60s. They no longer work.

Alito was confirmed. The Congress is stacked; the Supreme Court is frozen for the forces of big government and tyranny. At this point we cannot count on electing replacements because the ballot process has been hijacked. It is time to climb out of the box and take the offensive.

Bloggers are under attack. They need to be protected. Therefore, the ACLU needs to organizing task forces and action network so that any blogger who is attacked for free speech issues will get all the support needed to spring him or her while using each case to awaken the public to what is happening.

Think of it as the medical support we owe our military when, to protect us, they put themselves in harms way.

We have been divided, right and left, Green and Libertarian. These chasms are in large part fiction, constructed to prevent effective communication and a unified front for protecting the rights of individuals against the predations of the unholy alliance between megacorporations and government.

Decent people may have disagreements about how to get there but they all understand where we want to go. The rights of individuals as enunciated by Jefferson remain today the Mission Statement of America, more profound and compelling of our loyalty than any government or political party. How ever we live, as long as we do no harm to others, is ours to decide.

Political parties are tools we created to help us achieve the goals left uncompleted at the time of America’s founding. Political parties were immediately used to oppose the full participation of each individual in that vision. Blacks remained in slavery; women dispossessed of their rights to their own property and to their bodies. Slavery, as Americans are beginning to see, comes in many kinds.

Where political parties fail because they have proven to be incapable of advancing the work of human emancipation they must be discarded. One of their most profound failings is in the divides they made possible. The redefinition of meanings, linking loyalty to words like ‘conservative’ instead of to the profound principles underlying America’s Mission Statement worked to convert our rights, inherent and preceding government, to privileges, granted by government.

The change in definition that has helped create these divides is beautifully enunciated by R. J. Eskow in his article that appeared today on Huffington.com.

The solution is a working coalition and the way to make that work is to start working together to protect our first line of defense, a common problem, the coming persecution of Bloggers.

Our uniting agenda must include protecting Bloggers as the last bastion of free speech and the Internet as the village commons where opinions are aired, judged, and adopted through the process of persuasion and consent.

Left, Right, Libertarian, and Green; we have common cause and a common need. That need is urgent and compelling. We cannot yet guarantee an honest vote but we can support the warriors of the word who are out there in the trenches.

Blog Power: Celebrate the heroes among us.

Blogging has become the true voice of the people, the only one that the NeoCons have not yet managed to stifle. American Patriots will continue to speak out. In silence freedom would truly die.

I’d Rather Be A Guide Than A Coach

A tremendous amount of discussion, books and articles has been devoted to coaching others, not just in sports but also in the business world. Coaching has become a buzzword. Rather than supervising, managing, training, counseling or mentoring subordinates you have become a coach.

It is interesting that as our society becomes less personalized and more technical our language is being modified to lessen the impact of words. Supervisor, manager, leader and mentor now become coach. Are we really evolving into a more participative style of leadership or simply becoming politically correct to soften authoritative words? I am not sure, but I know I don’t like it. My issue with being a coach in the business world is that the executive or managerial coach does not participate in the game, does not go in harm’s way, does not take the risks the players do. He or she is confined to the sidelines, watching, not exposed to the danger, failure or mistakes.

I believe coaching is a wonderful educational method but ineffective as a training experience. I define training as the process of teaching the required skills and knowledge for the staff member’s current job. The best way to train staff based on that definition is as a guide.

A guide’s purpose is to safely navigate the terrain with you from point A to point B. Along the way the guide identifies dominant features of the landscape, hazards, safety precautions, alternate routes, how to protect yourself from the weather, rest stops, how to read a map or compass, where to find food and water, the basics of first aid, how to pack your gear and the best vistas to view and enjoy. He or she trains you to navigate the terrain on your own in the future rather than talking you through your journey in the cabin and then sending you on your way.

The guide differs from the coach in this way. At the end of the journey the guide will have transferred knowledge and hands on practice that will enable the student to understand and experience the following: The student will know what is to be accomplished, why the journey is important, when the task is to be accomplished, where the task is to be performed and how to do the task based on knowledge gained from the guide and practical experience.

As you guide staff through the journey they are drawing their own conclusions, making mental notes and planning their next journey, using the guide’s knowledge and experience as a foundation. The guide is creating an environment where a staff member can come and practice his or her job. A guide draws out of his or her student three key learning styles, visual, audio and kinesthetic: seeing, hearing and doing. Adults learn best by doing.

The guide ensures that there are programmed, confidence building exercises and decision-making points for the student along the journey. The goal is that towards the end of the journey the student becomes the guide ready for his or her own adventures.

How to Stay Motivated and Stick to Your Goals

Dear Friend,

I would like to start by sharing a small excerpt from an incredibly riveting book, which reveals how powerful the human spirit is, even when opposed by extreme elements. This quote, which illustrates how intense desire can help us forge through unbelievable obstacles, comes from Into Thin Air…

When Jon Krakauer reached the summit of Mt. Everest in the early afternoon of May 10, 1996, he hadn’t slept in fifty-seven hours and was reeling from the brain-altering effects of oxygen depletion. As he turned to begin his long, dangerous descent from 29,028 feet, twenty other climbers were still pushing doggedly toward the top. No one had noticed that the sky had begun to fill with clouds. Six hours later and 3,000 feet lower, in 70-knot winds and blinding snow, Krakauer collapsed in his tent, freezing, hallucinating from exhaustion and hypoxia, but safe. The following morning, he learned that six of his fellow climbers hadn’t made it back to their camp and were desperately struggling for their lives. When the storm finally passed, five of them would be dead, and the sixth so horribly frostbitten that his right hand would have to be amputated.

I’ve often wondered what must go through a person’s head during such a challenging event. In fact, I even wonder whether a person in this type of tragic circumstance feels like giving up altogether. Or, is this even a choice, given their internal desire?

What’s inside people like this that drives them to continue on? What propels them to dig so deep into their souls they simply cannot (or will not) see failure as an option? What’s inside people like this that drives them to continue on? What propels them to dig so deep into their souls they simply cannot (or will not) see failure as an option? What is the internal driving force that motivates them to reach their ultimate goals?

Over the years, I’ve come to realize my strengths and weaknesses. Thankfully, one of my primary strengths is the drive, determination, and perseverance I have to continuously outdo myself. To become a better, smarter person. A better Father. Brother. Son. Husband. And on the top of my list is my desire for improved health and physical appearance. For some reason, I adopted this mindset from a very early ageright after my parents divorced.

Was it vanity? I don’t think so. Pride is more like it.

As I’ve continued to try to better myself as a person, I’ve always striven to learn more and more about the mental aspects of motivation. Motivation is, in some ways, like the match to a fire. It’s akin to the spark in a car engine cylinder. I’ve studied its uses and drawbacks in both ordinary and extraordinarily successful people for years. So by now, I’d like to think I know a great deal about human mental performance. But like all things in life, we remain students for as long as we are open to learning.

If there’s one thing I’ve learned for sure, though: motivation almost never lasts, whereas inspiration can serve as a long-term guide to your ultimate goal.

Nonetheless, I’ve also become aware of the fact that without motivation, there would be no action or the slightest movement in the direction toward any particular set of goals. So, as you can plainly see, motivation is as important as inspiration. We just need to understand how to use it more thoughtfully.

But what happens when, after starting a new diet, workout program, or transformation quest, our motivation wanes? …what happens when, for some unknown reason, we’re not noticing the type of progress we were expecting? Or worse, we stop seeing any progress at all? How do we reignite the fire?

These are all excellent questions. Ones I’ve worked hard to answer.

So please allow me to share with you the most powerful strategies I’ve used to keep myself (and others) on the right path… regardless of the situations encountered along the wayto help you reach your goals of a new, healthier, stronger, more muscular body.

Increase Your Confidence
Sometimes the accomplishment of our goals might seem so overwhelming, the immediate temptation is to give up before we even startwhich diminishes our self-confidence even further.

Success Strategy #1: MEASURE YOUR PROGRESS. This way, you will never, at any time, lack a sense of accomplishment, and more powerfully, you will be building your confidence with each and every step. You see, we can’t gain confidence until we begin to take action, which in effect builds our confidence. Yet, we don’t want to take action until our confidence levels are raised sufficiently, and we feel certain about our new endeavor. See the dilemma here?

I know this sounds crazy…but, what if I told you that you can gain your confidence, little-by-little, by taking action on your transformation goals and measuring your progress, one step at a time.

You see, ultimately, our level of confidence is increased only when we do something tangible that can be measured for progress. Take, for example, the intimidating obstacle of viewing your entire transformation goal as needing to be achieved in a giant, single step. That’s paralyzing, isn’t it?

That’s why, to gain your confidence, you must break your transformation goal down into measurable increments or steps. Something on a weekly basis works great. For example, if you wanted to lose 12% bodyfat within 12 weeks, then you could realistically set your increments for 1% of bodyfat reduction per week. This way, you don’t have to focus on the whole transformation goal at any given time, nor do you notice all that you have not yet accomplished to date. Instead you can focus on the smaller, manageable steps ahead, and celebrate each accomplishment along the way. This gives you a tremendous sense of control, forward motion, and achievement. And builds your confidence, each step of the way.

I promise, by the time you are nearing the end of your first couple of weeks of your transformation program, despite the ups and downs in progress, you will begin to feel more confident. You will stretch your “comfort zone” and do something more than you originally thought you were capable of doing. You will be utterly determined to advance one more step, and another, and so on, and make the effort to complete your transformation program and build your very best body.

Suddenly, as the fear dissipates, you will discover your newfound confidence. And best of all, you will have achieved what you once thought was impossibleone step at a time.

As the late Eleanor Roosevelt said, “You must do the thing you think you cannot do.” When you do, notice how your confidence soars, every time!

Success Strategy #1: MEASURE YOUR PROGRESS. The path to the transformation success you desire, which appears to be out of reach, is accomplished only through measuring your progress, one step at a time. This way, you will never, at any time, lack a sense of accomplishment, and more powerfully, you will be building your confidence with each and every step.

Set SMART Goals
Goals come from having a clear vision of what you want. Knowing that you want to build your very best body is a great start, but you need something more than thata statement so compelling it literally pulls you, like a magnet, in the direction of its achievement.

So you say you’re not certain how to set effective goals? Well, don’t worry, everyone starts off this way…merely stating they want to get into better shape or have a slimmer waist. And these statements might be as good as it gets for them.

But to really set effective transformation goals and ensure you’ll reach them, you’re going to have to learn what I call the SMART technique in goal setting to pave your way to sure success.

Success Strategy #2: TRANSFORM YOUR FITNESS GOALS
Using the S.M.A.R.T. technique will ensure you’ve set an effective and commanding goal and compel you to achieve it.Not only will this technique enable you to set the most effective commanding goals, it will help focus your efforts on exactly what you want to achieve.

S.M.A.R.T. stands for:

(S)pecificyou must be specific about what you want to achieve, creating your goal in the present tense…that means using “I am (in the process of…)” to start your goal statement.

(M)easurablehow do you measure “better shape” or a “slimmer waist?” You can’t. Therefore, you must ensure your progress can be measured by scaling your goal to a specific number (e.g., 10% bodyfat, a 33-inch waist, or a size 6).

(A)ction-orientedyou must be able to create an action list of things you must do to achieve success (this is similar to a to-do list, only it pertains directly to the achievement of your goal).

(R)ealisticmake certain your goal is realistic, that it stretches you but is something you can achieve, given your expectations and timeframe.

(T)ime-consciencethis is where we harness the power of a deadline. Nothing becomes important to us unless we set a deadline on it. A date forces us to give it priority and set positive pressure on us to achieve it.

Success Strategy #2: TRANSFORM YOUR FITNESS GOALS. Using the S.M.A.R.T. technique will ensure you’ve set an effective and commanding goaland will not only clarify your path to success but will compel you to achieve it.

Find Your Source of Motivation (through Inspiration!)

So you need a little source of motivation in your lifesomething to get you out of bed in the morning and carry you through the daysomething to feverishly motivate you through to the end to meet your transformation goals? Well, what if I told you there is a direct relationship between motivation and inspiration, and sources of each of these are all around you, all of the time.

Success Strategy #3: FIND AN INSPIRATION
Discover your source for inspiration, someone who has turned their body and life from ordinary to extraordinary. You see, motivation is something we feel, deep inside, that compels us to move toward our goalsit’s usually a quick burst, in the moment so to speak, and can fade in an instant as well.

On the other hand, inspiration is more enduring. Inspiration is derived from sources all around uspersonal heroes who energize and inspire you because of the level of success they have achieved, for example. These sources of inspiration can be used to motivate us daily and keep us on track because they too had to break through the same barriers, persevere through similar shortcomings, and overcome equal challenges.

One way to continually “see” what you want to become is to find a picture of someone’s physique you would most like to emulate (probably in your favorite fitness magazine), cut it out, and hang it someplace where you’re likely to see it over and over again throughout the day. Removing Spot Scratches in Your Treasured Photos - 5 Minute Digital Fix

Probably one of the most common problems you will be faced with in doing any type of digital photo restoration work will be to do with spot scratches on your old photos.

When we first look at those old black and white or early colour photos they often have small scratch marks and spots on them from being stored incorrectly.

These small spot scratches are easily perceived by your eye when you are looking at the photo, detracting from the overall subject matter.

Here is a very easy quick fix using Adobe Photoshop’s History Brush tool.

Our example “before” image on our web-site has numerous small spot scratches on the old sepia toned photograph.

The basic removal method described here can quickly and effortlessly bring those scratched photos back to (almost) their former glory using the History Brush Tool found in Photoshop.

This basic technique works extremely well for those types of images that have spot scratches in areas of the photo that do not contain a lot of detail.

As you can see in our example image on the web-site, the spots tend to be primarily on the background of the photo, making it ideal for this correction method.

Step - 1

Having opened up the image in Photoshop we will first apply the Dust and Scratches filter by selecting Filter->Noise->Dust & Scratches …

Set the Threshold to between 1 and 4 (I generally start with 1) and then increase the Radius until you see the spot scratches disappear.

Our example image on the web-site finally made the largest spot scratch on the left hand side of the photo disappear at a Threshold of 3 and Radius of 10.

All well and good but our image is now totally blurred!! Not really what we wanted to see is it?

This is where the History Brush tool comes into play.

Step - 2

Open up the History Palette by selecting Window->History if you cannot see the window already open.

We are going to create a “Snapshot” of the current state of the image in question by clicking on what looks like a little image of a camera at the bottom of the History Palette window (see the red arrow on the web-site image).

After clicking you will notice that the History Palette now shows an extra image icon called “Snapshot 1″.

This is a snapshot of the image that includes the effect of apply the Dust & Scratches Filter in Step 1.

Now click on the little square box to the left of Snapshot 1.

You will see a little “brush” icon appear which is now telling us that the “Snapshot 1″ image will be used as our “source” when we paint with the History Brush.

Remember … this snapshot image actually has none of the spot scratches on it because we made them disappear by applying the Dust & Scratches filter in Step 1.

Step - 3

Make the original (un-touched) history snapshot active by clicking on it (in the case of our example image this is “Restore-Before-Image.jpg”).

Select the History Brush from the main toolbar (this has the same icon as the little “brush” icon that appeared in the History Palette window).

We are now ready to “paint away” those spot scratches!!

Step - 4

I’m going to zoom in on the largest scratch on the left hand side of the photo to show you how we use the History Brush.

We selected the History Brush in Step 3.

Select an appropriate brush size and soft edges.

We now need to decide how to apply the brush to the scratches in question.

You will notice that the scratches in our example image are “lighter” than the surrounding image.

Step - 5

We need to paint “darker” pixels and as such we set the History Brush Mode: to “Darken” (Top Menu Bar option when you have the History Brush as the active tool).

This has the effect of “telling the History Brush” to only replace pixels on the original image with pixels from our snapshot if the snapshot pixel is darker.

Start to paint over the scratches and see what happens.

The scratches start to miraculously disappear as you paint over them.

They are being replaced with the underlying snapshot image pixels you created in Step 1.

The benefit of using this techniques is that you have complete control over which parts of the original image you “paint over” so as not to blur important details of the image had you just applied a Dust & Scratches filter to the whole image.

Now what if your scratches are darker than the surrounding image, I hear you ask?

Easy!! … just use a History Brush Mode: of “Lighten” instead of “Darken”.

You can experiment with all of the History Brush options - Mode, Opacity and Flow until you get the desired result.

The resulting “After” image has had all of the spot scratches removed easily without compromising on the photographic detail of the image.

And there you have it!!
Less than five minutes of digital image manipulation to remove those unwanted spot scratches.
